FREE UP WEDNESDAYS Relaunches at REPUBLIC - Feb 1st, 2012

After 4 years of doing FREE UP WEDNESDAYS at Shine Night Club, the last FREE UP at Shine went down January 11th. A few different reasons factored in to us moving the night but we'd like to say thank you very much to the owners and staff at Shine who always made the club feel like home. We are sad to go but things change and we are happy to have a new residency at REPUBLIC!

Starting Wednesday, February 1st, and every Wednesday after that, FREE UP will be relaunching at Republic on the patio. The whole crew is back including DJ's Rexx, Hoppa, Chizzle and myself, Arems. Always dropping the best Dancehall, Soca and Reggae, you can expect a lot of special events and guests! February alone sees the grand opening party, followed by the Fiyah Fi Bun Dem Part 6 CD Release plus two guest appearances from local and over seas DJs! Republic also has some of the best drink specials on Wednesdays including $4 Heinekens. An added bonus is the main room at Republic features old school hip hop by DJ C-Stylez and special guests for Down By Law.

10 years of Faction Sound Crew has been pretty ill. Back in 2001, DJs Arems, Tanner and Akshun broke off from a wider collective they had been djing with and formed the Faction Sound Crew. Ever since then, things have been getting bigger and better. From touring the world to doing multiple residencies in Vancouver, Whistler and now New York and Miami... the Faction has been locking things down - but there's far more to come. The addition of our MC, Matt the Trigga, back in 2006 brought a new edge to the crew's group performances and in 2009 another crew member was added - New York's Iron Lyon, for even more fire power.

We all grew up and started djing with RAP music, therefore, it's only fitting that Iron Lyon sets off the Faction's 10 Year Anniversary Mix CD with a throw back to the golden era, laced with a few faction Rap Dubplates, and even a track from Iron Lyon himself.

Arems comes with the all Dubplate section consisting of mainly dancehall dubs remixed over current and golden era hip hop beats. More RAP dubplates can be found in his section which show cases a lot of his favourite artists from the past and present.

Tanner shuts shit down with a Moombahton finale that will have any fan of music in general nodding their head to the pounding beats and smoothed out remixes of familiar songs now transformed into the new Moombahton genre.

As a final update on my East Coast Mini Tour to Toronto and New York, we wanted to show you some video and provide you with the audio from the Faction's guest set for the Federation Invasion Nov 9th on East Village Radio.

East Village Radio was first established in June 2003, and originally broadcast on the airwaves at 88.1 FM as a pirate radio station. After an article in The New York Times described the station, the FCC sent a cease-and-desist letter (being that the station was unlicensed). Due to the difficulty of obtaining new FM licenses, even LPFM licenses, in a large metropolis such as NYC, the decision was made to make EVR an internet radio station.

Every Wednesday from 4pm to 6pm you can tune into http://EVR.com (@EVRadio) to hear Max Glazer and DJ Autograph dropping the newest dancehall and reggae with tons of exclusives and guests rolling through. We were lucky enough to be asked to do a 30 minute all dubplate set which you can listen to streaming below and catch the highlights in the video.

DJ Arems - East Coast Tour Recap and Photos (Toronto to NYC)

On November 3rd I headed East to do 5 nights in Toronto and New York. The tour was ill and I got to dj at a lot of nice spots with a lot of dope DJs! Toronto saw me play Sake and Soul at Dazzling and Heart of the City at Woo Lounge. Big shout outs to BIG Jacks, DJ J-Class and Kariz for throwing pakd douche-bag-free parties in a City where it's hard to get away from the fist pumpers. After that I headed South to NYC to link up with DJ Tanner and do a trio of dancehall nights in the Big Apple.

Monday Night was INSANE at Tammany Hall for Rice and Peas with DJs Gravy, Max Glazer, Micro Don, Maya and Skerrit Bwoy among others. The house was packed with dancers and the vibe was crazy all night. Stay tuned for Video of what happened around 3am when Skerrit Bwoy got on the mic.

Tuesday night saw the Faction at Riddim N Vibes inside No Malice Palace with DJ Autograph, Golden and Rampage Sound Global for a night of strictly dancehall and BERE VIBES. On Wednesday I was lucky enough to do a guest spot on East Village Radio with Max Glazer and Autograph for the Federation Invasion. I did a half hour dubplate set (by request) and the audio from that show will be posted shortly

Thursday found me inside and completely rammed Happy Ending for Brand New Machine with Max Glazer and Autograph. The club used to be a massage parlor and still has the remnants of Steam Rooms and Shower Heads everywhere. Super ill club and a really dope Party. Since its inception in 2007 the Red Bull Thre3style has consistently gained momentum every year until it became the juggernaut it is today. Strictly a Canadian affair until 2010; the contest went international and became the benchmark for world dj competitions. 2011 has seen this phenomenon snowball into the biggest week in world dj competition, and Vancouver dj culture's respective history. Dj Tanner is making his debut at XIX for NYC promoter Bill Spector's weekly 90's hip hop jam. He is very honored to share the tables with D-Nice. D-Nice is a NY legend; a dj, rapper, beatboxer and photographer. Below is a great anecdotal story from his website www.d-nice.com.

THHS: My Run-In With The Infamous Larry Davis

I grew up in a tenement apartment building in the Bronx, on the corner of 163rd Street and Woodycrest Avenue. Exactly four streets away from me lived the infamous Larry Davis. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Larry, he was a suspected killer who was wanted for the robbery and murder of six drug dealers in the late 1980's. Larry became a ghetto folk hero after wounding multiple police officers in a gun battle and leading the NYPD on a 17-day manhunt. He was eventually convicted in 1991 for the murder of a drug dealer.

On the streets, Larry was known as someone with a nasty temper that you never wanted to cross. I always felt that Larry was cool and that the rumors of his ferocious ways were untrue. At least, that was until I got on his bad side. Some of the kids in the neighborhood had odd ways of making money. One of the things they would do was to crawl down into the street drains and sort through the sewage in hopes of finding anything of value. Some days they would return with lost jewelry or a bag of dirty coins retrieved from the sewers of New York City.

One day I ran into Larry's younger cousin while hanging out in the neighborhood park. He approached me and asked if I would be interested in purchasing a gold rope chain and an anchor pendant from him that he found while sorting through the sewage. Now back in the 80's, everyone who had a little bit of flavor wore the rope chain and anchor combination so of course I was interested in purchasing the items. I gave him his asking price in exchange for the jewelry.

A few days later, I heard a loud knock at my door. A knock like that could only have been one of two things, either the cops or someone planned on robbing us. I slowly walked over to the door and looked through the peephole and was shocked to see that it was Larry. I immediately thought to myself, "Why the hell is he knocking at my door?" So, with the door still closed, I said, "What's up Larry?" and he replied, "Open this fucking door and give me my motherfucking chain." "What chain?" I asked, and he said, "The fucking chain my cousin stole from me and sold to you!"

Now, I am no fool. Although I was only 16 years old at the time, I clearly understood the rules of the streets. Had I opened the door, there's a possibility that Larry would have pulled out his gun and put a couple of slugs in me and I was not about to take that chance. So I said to him that I didn't have it. This only infuriated him even more. He said, "I'm going to walk to my house and return in 15 minutes. You better have my fucking chain."

The only thing that saved me was when my cousin Vanessa, whom I lived with, ran into Larry while he was walking back to his house. He informed her that if I didn't return his jewelry, he was going to kill me. She rushed home crying and got the jewelry from me and returned it to him. A few weeks later, the NYPD hunt for Larry Davis began. In 2008, Davis was stabbed to death in a fight with another inmate.

The Vancouver Redbull 3 Style went down Wednesday October 5th at Fortune Sound Club and featured 8 djs battling to see who's the best party rocker in Vancouver. Rules were simple - play at least 3 genres of music in 15 minutes and rock the crowd. Participants were:

Faction’s Extended Bio

Good things happen when tight knit friends with a deep love of music decide to join forces. After honing their skills as bedroom DJs, Arems, Tanner and Akshun soon found themselves playing in lounges, DMC battles and smaller clubs around the way. All three DJs soon got involved in college radio and by the time they met in Vancouver it didn’t take long for a bond to form. The Faction Sound Crew was formed in 2001 by Dj’s Arems, Akshun & Tanner and was joined by hypeman MC Trigga in 2006 and New York DJ Iron Lyon in 2010. Residencies at some of Vancouver’s bigger night clubs soon started and the crew began touring and putting out Mixtapes.

Soon after forming, the Faction found themselves playing alongside world class DJs and urban artists all over Canada. Their mixtapes caught the attention of a wider audience across Canada and began spreading around the globe. Currently the Faction has released over 20 mixtapes in group and solo projects with a diverse range of musical styles ranging from Hip Hop to Dancehall to Electro. Accolades soon arrived and in 2007 the Faction was nationally recognized at the Stylus DJ Awards with a nomination for best mixtape. 2008 brought 3 more Stylus DJ award nominations including Best Mixtape, Best Canadian Reggae DJ, and Favourite Vancouver DJ which was won by DJ Arems. Nominations continued in 2009 and ’10 in the Vancouver DJ of the year and Canadian Club DJs of the year categories.

As of late the world has come calling. In 2007 the Faction embarked on an Asian tour playing in the mega clubs of Shanghai, Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as doing many dates all over Canada. 2008 found the Faction touring in Europe and also included 2 National tours playing at some of Canada’s largest mega clubs including multiple dates at the Guverment in Toronto (rated one of the top 5 clubs in North America). 2009 and ’10 saw various tours across the US and Canada plus a return to Europe and Asia.

Locally The Faction has been holding down residences at Vancouver’s hot spots for unheard of lengths of time with residencies at certain clubs ranging 5 to 10 years. Their infamous industry night at Balthazar, Sunday Night Soundsystem ran for half a decade and established Sundays as a big night to party in Vancouver. You can currently catch the Faction DJing 5 nights a week at packed venues across the city. If you’ve found an amazing party – it’s most likely the Faction is in the DJ booth dropping pure fire.

The Big Pay Back Fundraiser for Kool Herc Sunday April 10th at W2 (all ages)

When Jheric Hizon, a member of the local Bboy crew Now or Never found out that New York's DJ Kool Herc was hospitalized and in need of some financial assistance to pay his medical bills, he immediately contacted some fellow hip-hop heads to host a fundraiser.

The Big Payback fundraiser (named after a classic track by EPMD, a duo also considered among
the pioneers of hip hop) will be held at W2 Storyeum, 151 W. Cordova St, in Vancouver, B.C.,
on April 10, 2011.This will be an all-ages event from 2-7 p.m. that will feature all the elements
of hip hop: Bboying/Bgirling, MCing, DJing and graf writing. A $10 minimum donation will be
collected at the door, with all proceeds set to be donated to the Kool Herc Fund. More info on the

Thankfully, Kool Herc is out of the hospital. However, Hizon says “the Vancouver hip hop
community would still like to pay tribute to Kool Herc and the other hip-hop pioneers that paved
the way for what we do today.” And although The Big Payback was inspired by Kool Herc's
unfortunate situation, organizers say should the need to raise funds for another pioneer occur
again, this might not be the last you see of The Big Payback! That's how much the local community recognizes how indebted they are to their East Coast forebears.

IRON LYON - GET WELL SOON!!!

Our homey and newest member of the Faction - DJ Iron Lyon headed down to Miami at the beginning of this month for what was to be a sunny winter away from New York City filled with new residencies at huge Miami clubs and tons of beach action. Three days after arriving to Miami he purchased a scooter, pictured above, to get around town and B-line for the beach. Miami life at any price came to a smashing halt though when a city bus side swiped and then ran over our boys arm the day after his purchase. 12 days later we finally heard from Iron Lyon who had been recovering in a Miami hospital with an arm that was broken in four places. He's doing ok now but with not much feeling in one of his hands - djing is out of the question for now until his arm heals more and he goes through some rehab. We're all hoping that things will be back to normal by mid January and he'll be back on the wheels destroying it like only he can. HEAL UP and stay safe homey...and LAWSUIT too!!! Hahaa...we wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.

New Faction Sound Crew Member - IRON LYON

I'm not sure why it took us so long to announce our new Faction Sound Crew member Iron Lyon but it's definitely over due. Many of you have noticed his name mentioned in our dubplates and some of you have gotten the chance to meet him. We've been linking up with Iron Lyon for over a year now and put him down with the team this past summer. Iron Lyon is an accomplished DJ and MC with many residencies in New York City and a brand new EP out on Fat Beats Records. We first met in New York through our mutual homie DJ Theory and collaborated on a few gigs in Brooklyn last year. Since then Iron Lyon has come through Vancouver and Toronto and is poised to make another pass through Vancity in November. Here's a rundown of his bio:

Rocking the turntables since he was 14, Iron Lyon has produced numerous mixtapes, toured Japan as well as the U.S. & found his home in NYC for the last decade where he has become a well-known mixtape & club DJ. Lyon combines his roots in turntablism, his natural party rocking skills & his knack for reading a crowd spinning a diverse blend of hip hop, reggae, r & b, classics, electro and more. Recently Iron Lyon has DJ’d alongside the likes of DJ Premier, Questlove, Q-Tip, Funkmaster Flex, Kid Capri, Biz Markie and many more at large venues including Santos, Brooklyn Bowl & his current residency Greenhouse. Iron Lyon also has recorded & released two full-length albums featuring artists like Sean Price, Craig G, C-Rayz Walz, Ed O.G. & Slim Kid Tre where he showcases his lyrical abilities as well as his scratching skills. In addition, Lyon works in the South Bronx as a teacher for an after school program called Urban Art Beat where students learn to write, record & perform as well as music production & dance. The Goon Tribe, DJ's Kid, Goldenchild, Jemz and MC Chops, have been holding down Tokyo Bar Sundays for almost 10 years. The night is legendary in Montreal and known Canada wide as the spot to be on a Sunday to hear dope hip hop and a lil dancehall too. Faction Sound Quebec Tour - Day 2 - August 28, 2010

Things got a lil hectic and we didn't get a chance to post about Day 2 of the tour before it actually went down...so here's a recap. Although we'd played in Ottawa many a time, the city jus across the river was new territory to us. Gatineau lies only a 5 minute drive away from Ottawa but is in Quebec and is a mainly French speaking town. Our long time homey Kid SL had been holding down Pure for over a year now and from all his tweets and stories about the night, we were excited to finally play there. We arrived to find a well dressed crowd going awwfff to Kid SL's uptempo set and when we switched over we kept the vibe on the same level with non stop fist pumpers mixed in with some hip hop and dancehall. The large underground club stayed packed till the end of the night and we enjoyed every last minute of it. It's been a minute since the Faction has been able to tour with more than just one member rolling out but DJ's Tanner and Arems finally put it together in a place we've never toured...Quebec! With all the spots we've been able to play in Canada and all over the world, Quebec was always somehow out of reach. This week our Quebec tour starts in Montreal and Sherbrooke on Friday August 27th. DJ Tanner will be joining Get Nice at Blizzarts in Montreal with DJ's Maysr and Guilty while DJ Arems link with DJ Blast in Sherbooke at Living Room. Tonight, at the Hungarian Community Hall, history will be made as every big Sound in Vancouver joins the world famous Stone Love for a sell off Dance not to be missed. When you hear a DJ use the "air horn" sound effect in their set - it traces back to Stone Love - the first crew to ever use the sound. Here's a lil history on Stone Love if you are unfamiliar with the name:

Not sure why this didn't get posted a while back but here it finally is. I did this remix a few months ago and it's since graced a couple mixtapes and many spins in the clubs. At the time the single was brand new and the acapella that's floating around on the net now wasn't out yet so i had to make one myself. The DIY acapella turned out pretty well and i put it on the '90s Up Close and Personal Riddim which spawned the hits "Everyone Falls In Love" by Tanto Metro and Devonte and "Sean Paul's Nah Get No Bligh." It's finally here. I started working on this mixtape in mid 2009 and would go back to it every now and then. By the end of the year i realized i'd left it a little too long so i got rid of a lot of riddims and kept only the best - making it a best of 2009 mix cd. I crammed as many tracks as I could but there are a couple riddims i didn't have time to fit in on the CD. Still, there are 80 tracks featuring 14 dubplates and 15 riddims plus many singles on this 80 minute mix.

The CD release party went down last Wednesday at Shine for Free Up Wednesdays and it was PACKD. Big Ups to all those that made it out for the party. The feedback on the CD has been great so far. Grab the one track continuous mix here for free or hit me up for your copy if you see me.

Back in early November The Faction went on a 5 city tour hitting up Guelph, Ottawa, Toronto, Boston and New York with multiple dates in Toronto and NYC. Definitely one of the livest nights on the tour was the stop in Boston at Rumor with Dj Jayceeoh and myself (Arems) on the wheelz and Serani hosting and performing. Lots of footage was taken on this tour but for now we leave you with Serani's performance in Boston and some views of the night at Rumor Night Club. We're slowly editing the footage from the entire tour and hope to have it posted soon.

The Faction Sound Crew East Coast Take Over - Day 1

The Faction returns to the East Coast and the Take Over starts tonight in Guelph at Van Gogh's. DJ Arems is playing at a Soca Fete called midterm Cool Down 5 with Dj Illiment (T-Dot), Dj Sensi (T-Dot) & hosted by Sir Lancelot! Look for big chunes to be dropped all night and nuff dubplates.

This 5 City Take Over Tour sees DJ Tanner in Ottawa on Friday night, while Arems does a seperate party in Toronto for Friday. The Faction reunites like Votron to destroy two more nights together in Toronto on Saturday and Monday. The U.S. leg of the tour then begins with a night in Boston and two nights in NYC.
